The Great Wall is a scenic spot that tourists cannot miss in
Beijing. The magnificent structure is a rare military defense project in history. With long-standing history, grand construction effort and majestic spirits,
the Great Wall is the honor and symbol of the Chinese. Built in the Warring States Period, and reconstructed many times in following dynasties,
the Great Wall has now become a world cultural heritage by the UNESCO.
Among all parts of
the Great Wall, Badaling is most famous and the earliest part to be opened, and it is also the best-preserved. Badaling, located at Yangquing County, is a mountain pass whose highest point is 1015meters. Its total length is 3741 meters. Its average height is 8 meters, but some can reach 15 meters. Its foundation is 6.5 meters wide in average, which allows five horses or ten people to proceed abreast at the same time.
Another must-see is Juyongguan Pass. In ancient times, Juyongguan Pass was the gateway from the north to
Beijing. It was from here that the Mongolian attacked
Beijing. On both sides of the pass are carpeted with dense trees and flowers in summer. Its beauty is listed as “Eight Great Sights of Yanjing.”
