The Olympic Green

On 2003, Beijing successfully applied to host the 2008 Olympics. So the government and citizens have been making effort and preparing for it. In Chaoyang District of Beijing City located the Olympic Green, which gathers 10 venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

There will be 31 venues totally in Beijing, many of which are under construction. Among those venues, National Stadium with its shape like a bird’s nest attracts the most attention and will be the main stadium of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. With a capacity of 91,000 seats, the National Stadium will serve as the place for the opening and closing ceremony of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Athletics as well as football games will be held here. After the Olympics, the stadium is going to stage sports events, at national and international levels. Also some cultural an entertaining activities will be scheduled for post-game use.

Around National Stadium, there are 9 other venues. Together the area is called “the Olympic Green.” Outside Beijing, there are also competition venues, such as in Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Qinhuangdao, where soccer games will be held. Sailing will be conducted in Qingdao while equestrianism in Hong Kong.
